If you’ve ever experienced the frustration of pulling out the store bought play dough, only to find it dry and unusable, chances are, you’ve considered trying to make your own homemade version.
But like recipes for many things, recipes for Homemade Play Dough aren’t all created equal. Here’s a no cook version that is easy to whip up. Children can even help make their own dough by adding the ingredients (minus the boiling water) and mixing the dough. Although it may not taste great, this version is a good alternative for children who tend to still put things in their mouths or eat play dough since it’s completely edible.
- 2 Cups Flour
- 4 Tablespoons Cream of Tarter
- 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
- 1 Cup of Salt
- 2 Cups Boiling Water
- Food Colour or Kool Aid packets to add colour
In a large bowl, mix: 2 cups of flour 4 tablespoons of cream of tartar 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil 1 cup of salt 2 cups of boiling water Food colouring can be used to create coloured dough. Kool Aid packets also work well to create both coloured and scented dough. Once mixed, place dough on the counter and continue to knead to achieve final consistency. Store your homemade play dough in a plastic zip close bag or a tightly covered plastic container. For children who don’t struggle with putting things in the mouths or eating dough, glitter and essential oils (think peppermint, lavender, etc.) can also be added to change the texture, look or smell of the dough. Lids from household jars or containers, straws, cups, buttons, cookie cutters, popsicle sticks, children’s scissors and other common household items make great play dough toys.
