One of the easiest and quickest methods of preparing fresh, delicious homemade foods for babies is to bake or roast the foods. Baking foods is one of the best ways to retain the most nutrients and when it comes to fruits and vegetables, baking or roasting is also the best method for bringing out the greatest flavor and natural sweetness. Stone fruits such as peaches, apricots and plums are great first foods for babies and these fruits really bake nicely. For this puree I baked 2 peaches, 2 plums and 2 asian peaches. The end result of these baked fruits is a subtly sweet puree that pairs well with yoghurt, cereal, meats and even vegetables like sweet potato or butternut squash.
Turn this puree for baby into a lovely dessert or snack treat for the big kids in the house. Warm the puree and spoon it over frozen vanilla yoghurt or vanilla ice cream. If you want to be really decadent, crumble up some ginger snap cookies and sprinkle generously over the frozen dessert; finish with a drizzle of warm carmel sauce. Now that's the way to make homemade baby food!
Baked Stone Fruit Compote
This recipe is suitable for babies aged 6 months and older.
- 2 ripe peaches; stone removed, skin on and sliced
- 2 ripe plums; stone removed, skin on and sliced
- 2 Asian pears; seeded and sliced
- *spices, if desired (I used a sprinkle of cinnamon and ginger and a drip of vanilla)
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400F degrees.
Step 2: Put the fruits into a medium or large sized baking pan (no grease needed).
Step 3: Sprinkle with spices if you are using them.
Step 4: Bake in the oven for 25-40 minutes or until the skins of the fruits wrinkle or pucker.
Step 5: Remove from oven and allow to cool.
Puree the fruits, skins on, until a consistency that is good for your baby is reached. Mash lightly for those babies enjoying self feeding and thicker, lumpy and bumpy textures.
*Spices are generally recommended to be introduced to babies around 8 months of age; consult your pediatrician about the use of spices in your baby's foods and about introducing solid foods in general.
