One of Disneyland’s most popular treats is their Mint Julep. You can get them from the Mint Julep bar in New Orleans Square, adjacent to the train station. They are great to enjoy with some apple fritters on a hot day (or any day, really)!
I, too, love the Disney Mint Julep, but after I was diagnosed with a corn intolerance, I couldn’t drink them anymore because they are made with corn syrup. So I had to get my fix at home! You can make these with a store bought non-alcoholic creme de menthe syrup, but I found it surprisingly simple to make my own mint syrup by just steeping mint leaves (found with the rest of the packaged herbs in the grocery store’s refrigerated section) in a homemade simple syrup mixture. This is a great drink in itself, or perfect for when you’re missing Disneyland and need a little bit of magic at home!
Disneyland's Mint Julep Copycat Recipe
My corn syrup free take on this classic Disney refresher!
- water: 1 cup
- sugar: 1 cup
- mint leaves: 15-20
- lime juice: 4 teaspoons
- lemon juice: 2 teaspoons
- green food colouring: a few drops
- soda water: a splash (optional)
To make the mint syrup:
Step 1: Combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar in a small pot and heat on the stove until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat immediately and let cool.
Step 2: Transfer to a glass jar, preferably with a lid, and add 15-20 mint leaves. Cover the jar (either with a lid or with plastic cling wrap) and let sit in the refrigerator overnight, no more than 24 hours.
Step 3: Remove from the fridge and separate the mint leaves from the liquid using a strainer. Discard the mint leaves. The liquid is your mint simple syrup!
To make the Mint Julep:
Step 1: Add 4 teaspoons of lime juice and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice to the mint simple syrup and mix well.
Step 2: Add 1-2 cups ice water to the mint simple syrup, to taste. The mint simple syrup will be VERY sweet, so start with adding 1 cup of water and if it's still too sweet, add more water until you're happy with the taste.
Step 3: You can also add a splash of soda water to give your drink a little sparkle. Add one drop of green food colouring and mix well to obtain the signature green colour of Disneyland's Mint Julep.
Step 4: Garnish with maraschino cherries, a lemon wedge, and a sprig of mint.
If you want to make an adult version of the Mint Julep, just add a splash of bourbon and mix well!
