Weekend Movie Release Roundup: In Theatres & On DVD 8/5


This week’s releases take us to Brazil, Hawaii, and San Francisco with comedy, drama, and everything in between.


In Theatres 8/5/11

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (PG-13)

Starring James Franco, Andy Serkis, Tom Felton, and Freida Pinto

An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.


2. The Change-Up (R)

Starring Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds, Leslie Mann, and Olivia Wilde

A married man with children accidentally switches bodies with his bachelor best friend, hi-jinx ensue.


3. The Whistleblower (R)

Starring Rachel Weisz, Vanessa Redgrave, and Monica Bellucci

A drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska cop who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the U.N. for covering up a sex scandal.



On DVD & BLU-RAY (8/2/11)


1. RIO (G)

Starring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, and Leslie Mann

Blu is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, living a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda in the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota.  Blu and Linda think he’s the last of his kind, but when they learn about another Macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the faraway and exotic land to find Jewel, Blu’s female counterpart.  Not long after they arrive, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers.
