Generally when I think of drinks for the Super Bowl, only beer comes to mind.
For the most part, that is the beverage of choice during the big game. However, I don’t really like beer. Actually, I do like beer on two occasions: after I go scuba diving and when it’s about 98 degrees outside. At all other times, I drink wine. Which is why this year for the Super Bowl, I will be drinking wine. I have created some wine and food pairings for the Super Bowl because, you know, it’s my thing. And today, I am going to break it down for you because YES…you can pair wine with traditional Super Bowl food!
Entrées ~ (Click on each name for the recipe!)
Mexican Layered Bean Dip ~ This is my all time favourite entrée to make for the Super Bowl. It is fast and easy to make! You can pair any of the following wines with this dip: Zinfandel, Viognier, Rose, Riesling.
Spicy Spinach & Feta Hummus & Homemade Pita Chips ~ I love making homemade hummus. It is fast, easy and a delicious twist on plain hummus. Wines to pair with this dip: Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Pinot Noir.
Spicy Prawn Entrée ~ This is a family favourite. My mum has been making these prawns for years! Wines to pair with these prawns: Dry-Riesling, Chenin-Blanc, Crisp Chardonnay or Chablis.
Sausage & Cheese Meatballs ~ Another family favourite. My grandmother has been making these for as long as I can remember! They are spicy, cheesy and delicious! Wines to pair with this appetizer: Brouilly, Pinot Gris, Riesling
Barbecue Meats ~
Your first option would be to pair with a Zinfandel. These jammy, fruit forward wines pair very nicely with yummy sticky, sweet and spicy barbecue. Try Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel for $19.99. Another choice would be a fruity, jammy Syrah or Shiraz. Try Cambria Tepusquet Vineyard Syrah for $19 or d’Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz for $14.99.
I like my chilli to be spicy, on the medium to hot side. Your first option for a wine that pairs nicely is a Cabernet Sauvignon. Try Conn Creek Cabernet for $19.99. This is an amazing wine for the price. I also like to pair Cline Cellars Zinfandel with my chilli when I want spend a little less. You can find this Zinfandel for around $10.

Chicken Wings ~
A Petite Sirah goes nicely with mild chicken wings. I like Bogle Petite Sirah for $10. It is a fantastic wine for the price. If you are going to have hot, spicy chicken wings, stick with a sweeter wine like a Riesling. Try Chateau Ste. Michelle Eroica Riesling for $19.99 or if you want to spend a little less, try Penfolds Thomas Hyland Riesling for $13.
