Decorating: Picking Out The Perfect Paint Colour

How many times have you wanted to paint a room and stop in your tracks because you fear you will choose the wrong colours or you can’t afford an interior decorator to choose them for you?

Or are you the person who brings home tons of paint chips, but then can’t decide which one to choose and end up not painting at all?   There is no need to fear about choosing the the right paint colour or the need for a big budget any more.

All major paint companies have free online resources on their websites that will help you pick the right colour for any room. Each company has a different set-up, but no matter which one you visit you will come away with what you wanted – the perfect paint colour and/or scheme to paint your room.  The tools and visualizers are actually fun to play with – no tech skills needed – just start playing in an online white room or upload an actual photo and then click to see the magic happen right before your eyes.

I have found the easiest site to navigate is When you first land on the site you will see a screen that shows paint colour chips and two rooms with a window and white walls.

To start playing and finding the right colour, simply click on one of the colours in the colour palette and it will show up in the virtual rooms window.

To see what colours go with it – just click on the paint chip in the window and the chip flips to reveal coordinating colours.

Now you can paint the room with a little paint brush that pops up along with the adjacent room with a few clicks to see how the colours will look on the walls. Fun!

Over at Benjamin Moore you can download an actual photo of a room and play with hundred’s of colours and combinations.

Sherwin Williams has a room visualizer also – just upload your photo and 1. 2. 3… presto change-o you can see how your room would look painted in any colour you imagine.

My Colortopia can assist you even further with your colour choices. Upload a photo of your favourite image or one that inspires you and you will be shown colours to paint your room that were pulled from the image. Very cool!  Don’t have an image to upload then take the personality quiz to see what colours are chosen just for you. There is even a questionnaire to help you pick out the colours for a nursery at – My Baby’s Place.

Picking colours at online paint companies web sites takes the fear and guess work out of choosing what colour to paint a room.  So try it – get online, check out one of these helpful and fun sites so you can get all the rooms painted in your home the way you have always dreamed about.
