Ever wonder how you can balance it all as a mum? This is one interview in a series talking to mums who have found a way to make it work.
Meet Rachel Rudman, pediatric occupational therapist and founder of Grasshopper Preschool Prep Company and mum of Aliza and Zachary (19 and 16 years old) .
As the mother to two kids and two businesses, Rachel Rudman quickly learned the key to keeping sane was a flexible schedule and delegating. In addition to her occupational therapy practice helping upwards of 40 kids per week, she developed Grasshopper Preschool Prep Kits, which helps 3-5 year olds learn through games, and landed Barnes & Noble and FAO Schwarz as clients. What keeps the wheels of her busy life running is enlisting professional help at home.
What do you love about being a mom?
Nothing could have prepared me for the feeling of being a mum. I have appreciated different things at different stages of my kids’ lives. Overall, I just love watching them go through and experience life.
What do you enjoy most about working?
I never pegged myself to be the type who works as much as I do. I have two full-time jobs – my therapy practice and my Grasshopper Kits business. But, I love the feeling of connecting with my clients and helping them succeed. Kids can sense when they should trust someone and in my therapy practice, the kids trust me. It’s a great feeling!
What’s your biggest challenge in juggling both?
It’s important to me to give my kids a healthy dinner and have things organised for them when they come home.
How do you deal with it?
I delegate. I hired a full-time housekeeper who comes everyday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. She helps keep the house clean and organised and it is her responsibility to get dinner cooked and ready before the kids come home. I still find it challenging just to be organised enough to actually have the ingredients in the house for dinner. To deal with that, I now use a supermarket where I email my grocery order and they deliver it to my house. My drycleaner has a delivery service as well. They pick up on Tuesdays and drop off every Friday. These are real time savers.
How do you re-charge?
I recharge with a hot bath and a good book.
What advice would you give other women considering being a working mom?
I would say to first choose a career that makes you feel fulfilled. That may seem obvious, but most people don’t have that. I love what I do and it shows. I would also recommend choosing a career where you have flexibility. When my kids were younger, my hours were much less. Now that they are older, I am able to adjust my career accordingly. The nice thing about my career is that I’m my own boss.
Who inspires you?
My son inspires me. He has dealt with learning challenges and attention issues throughout his school years. He works so hard when something challenges him and doesn’t give up. His response when he works hard and doesn’t do well is to just try harder. He is the most persistent person I have ever met. He really amazes me.
What one thing can you not live without?
Unfortunately, it’s my iPhone. It allows me to be on the run as a mum while I keep on working.
If you had an hour of time to yourself, how would you spend it?
I probably would just enjoy the quiet house with a cup of coffee and the paper.
