I’m going to be completely honest: I’m not a morning person. It should come as no surprise, then, that Daylight Savings Time was invented to prevent me from becoming accustomed to early mornings.
Yes, yes. I realise there were a few other reasons as well, but the end result is DST + Mandy = Zombie.
When we “fall” back in October-ish, I have no problems. For a few short days until my body adjusts, I actually realise how nice it is to get up with time to spare in the mornings. Not enough to set my alarm a bit earlier the rest of the year, mind you, but I do get a little taste of it.
But come time to “spring” forward and “springing” become the last thing on my mind.
I’ve tried it all: sleep training myself to get up a bit earlier each morning the week before the time change, setting my clocks forward on Saturday to give myself a little extra time to adjust, going to bed a bit earlier in the hopes that more sleep will equal out to easier wake ups.
No matter what I try, my snooze button gets pushed and the groaning commences. To make matters worse, the kids don’t seem to have any problems with the time change at all. Of course, that could be because they average eleven hours of sleep a night and wake up before dawn well rested.
And now, this morning, is my first day at a new job. Yep! In my brilliance, I set my start date on the one morning a year when I can barely form a coherent sentence before 9 a.m. And I start work at 7:30.
I hope they don’t realise they’ve hired a zombie.
