I like to use honey, but a lot of people recommend dates for sweetness, and you can supplement the flavor with a dash of vanilla extract.
Now, almond milk is the most popular plant-based milk on the market these days, but for individuals with nut allergies, oat milk is an excellent alternative. Plus, oat milk has a delicious flavor and creamier texture than other plant-based milks, and it provides a boost of fibre in each serving.
Is oat milk actually healthy? Is it better for you than almond milk or cow’s milk? Ultimately, oat milk is a little higher in calories than almond milk and a little lower fat. The biggest difference (and best benefit) is that oat milk is high in beta-glucans — a soluble fibre with heart health benefits.

- rolled oats: 1/2 cup
- filtered water: 1 cup
- sweetener of choice (honey, dates, etc.)
- vanilla, optional
- cheesecloth or milk bag
Step 1: Combine the rolled oats and water in a blender. Add vanilla if desired as well as about a teaspoon of honey (or other desired sweetener). Let soak in blender for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Blend the ingredients for about one minute. Stop when the top begins to froth.
Step 3: Drape cheesecloth over a bowl and pour the oat milk on top to strain out the pulverized oats
Repeat if needed to strain the oat milk completed
Move the milk to a sealable container and store in the fridge for up to one week. Shake oat milk before serving or drinking as some particles will sink to the bottom.
