DIY Marbled Candy Apples Are a Unique Twist On a Fall Favourite
Is there anything more satisfying than an apple dessert in the fall? Some people love pumpkin but I’m more of an apple kind of girl, so these marbled candy apples are a real treat for me! And since these marbled candy apples are customizable with difference colours, flavors and sprinkles, your kids will have a blast helping you pick out the designs for each batch. Hard candy coating is so easy to make, and you simply swirl together a few colours to give the apples a marbled appearance.
There are a few tips for making these caramel apples. First, you need to use a candy thermometer to constantly take the temperature of the sugar mixture and ensure you remove it from heat at the right time. Because sugar can burn easily (especially as the temperature gets higher), keep the flame or heat at medium and watch it carefully as it approaches 300 degrees. So if you have smaller kids, you may want to discourage them from helping out with this step of the process. Also, in order to get more vibrant candy colours, make sure you dye the candy WHITE first. You can find white icing in any craft store or online!

5 Granny Smith apples
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup light corn syrup
White food colouring
2 colours food colouring
Liquid candy flavoring (optional)
Step 1: Wash and dry the apples and remove stems. Insert sticks (popsicle sticks, decorative sticks or lollipop sticks) into the tops of the apples until secure
Step 2: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set near your stovetop
Step 3: In a medium sized pot with a candy thermometer attached to it, combine sugar, water and corn syrup over medium heat
Step 4: Cook the mixture over medium heat until it reaches the "hard crack stage," about 300 degrees F
Step 5: Remove the mixture from heat and stir in the white food colouring and any desired flavoring (just a small amount) until the entire mixture is white
Step 6: Add about 2 drops of your desired food colouring, and use a stick to gently swirl the colours together but do not overmix
Step 7: With one hand, tilt the pot to the side. With the other, carefully dip the bottom half of the apple into the candy and swirl until coated
Step 8: If desired, immediately coat with sprinkles or sugar crystals. The candy will harden very quickly, so the sprinkles only have a few seconds to stick to the apples
Step 9: Then set upright on the parchment to cool completely
Step 10: Repeat with all apples, working quickly so that the mixture does not harden. Store finished apples at room temperature for up to 3 days.
