Kids’ Favourite Takeout: (Healthy) Copycat McDonald’s Apple Pie Recipe
I am not a big fast food person. However, somehow I always get suckered into trying the sweets off of fast food menus. Maybe it’s because I’m a dessert fanatic with no self-control, or maybe it’s because McDonalds always make them look so darn good. No matter the reason, clearly I know better and would prefer that my kids not consume this stuff on the regular, so I often set out to make my own copycat recipes. Those classic little McDonald’s apple pies are something I’ve always wanted to make at home, and who doesn’t love a handy, filled with sweet, warm apple pie filling? Turns out, making a healthier version is super simple and is something I even give my kids (and myself) for breakfast…not just dessert. Bake up a batch today and let me know what you think!

Servings: 8 pies
Ingredients:
fuji apples: 2 large, peeled and cut into ½-inch pieces
brown sugar: 2 tablespoons
unsalted butter: 2 tablespoons
corn starch: 2 teaspoons
salt: ¼ teaspoon
cinnamon: ½ teaspoon
refrigerated pie dough: 1 package (2 pieces), thawed
1 egg, beaten
Directions:
Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a reusable silicone liner.
Step 2: Place apples, sugar, corn starch, salt, cinnamon, and water into a large skillet over medium heat. Cook apples until fork tender, about 6 minutes. Allow apples to cool while you prepare the crust.
Step 3: Roll out both pieces of dough onto a floured surface.
Step 4: Cut dough into an 8-inch square and then into four 4-inch squares.
Step 5: Place about 1 tablespoon of apple mixture onto each of the dough squares.
Step 6: Brush the edges of each square with beaten egg and then fold one side of the dough over the apples. Crimp the edges with your finger to seal the pies closed.
Step 7: Cut 3 slits into the tops of each pie. Place pies onto prepared baking sheet and brush with egg wash.
Step 8: Bake pies in the oven for 20-30 minutes, until the pies are golden brown and cooked through. Let cool for 10 minutes on a baking rack. Serve warm. Enjoy.
